The City of Tyler Fire Department currently
has a staff of 132 certified Firefighters
and 10 pieces of front-line apparatus
providing fire and rescue emergency
services to our citizens and visitors
alike. They currently operate 9 stations
and cover an area of 52.97 square miles.
On May 11, 2005, the Tyler City Council
approved a Six-Year Plan that will provide
one new fire station with 12 additional
staff, relocation of two fire stations,
and provide two dedicated truck companies.
The Fire Department will also begin
a regular replacement schedule for apparatus.
Through a visionary administration and
a skilled and dedicated workforce, the
Tyler Fire Department will continue
to provide the highest level of fire
protection services to the citizens
of Tyler.
Persons who meet the qualifications
listed below may at that time apply
for the position of Firefighter I. Applicants
who do not meet the following minimum
qualifications will not be allowed to
test.
" Be a United States citizen or
meet an employment authorization requirement
as mandated by the Immigration Reform
and Control Act of 1986.
" Be 18 to 35 years of age on the
date of the written test (cannot be
36 at the time of the test).
" Be a high school graduate or
have a GED.
" Be in good health and able to
pass a medical examination.
" Be in good physical condition
and be able to perform all the essential
functions of the position.
" Possess a valid drivers license
on date of appointment.
" Be able to intelligently read,
write and fluently speak the English
language.
Processing Steps
1. Written examination which will measure
reading comprehension, mathematical
skills, mechanical comprehension and
table interpretation will be held on
November 18, 2005.
2. Those applicants who pass the written
examination will be placed on the Civil
Service Eligibility List for Firefighters
in order of the written examination
score.
3. All applicants will be interviewed
during the background verification process
and will be required to complete a Personal
History Questionnaire prior to the interview.
4. Polygraph examination
5. Background investigations will be
conducted on all candidates after completing
the polygraph examination.
6. Drug Screen
7. Medical examination and work fitness
examination.
