Texas Rural Best Award Grant Announced

Sandra Tenorio, Executive Director of Texas Rural Communities, Inc. (TRC), announced the availability of a new Texas Rural Best Award Grant. Tenorio said, "This is our sixth (6th) year in recognizing a Texas Rural Best program by awarding a $10,000 Grant to an innovative program in rural Texas. We have been delighted with the number of programs throughout the state that have submitted applications in the past. Rural Texans have a well-earned reputation of working hard to find innovative solutions to local needs. Our mission is to recognize, reward and learn from their innovations."

TRC is a non-profit organization created in 1934 to resettle the family farmer after the depression. The organization continues to serve farmers and ranchers by offering loans in conjunction with the Farm Service Agency. In addition, TRC finances small business loans and student and parent loans for rural college students.

Eligibility

Innovative projects in rural communities that have been developed and implemented by a 501(c) 3, Community Based Organization not affiliated with governmental or quasi-governmental organization(s). A copy of the 501 (c) 3 Certificate from the Internal Revenue Service must be attached. In addition, the innovative project must have a demonstrated success and achieved outcomes for at least one year to be considered eligible.

Applicants must include a current budget, balance sheet and profit/loss statement.

The program must benefit rural residents. A rural area includes all territory that is not within the outer boundary of any city having a population of one hundred thousand or more.

Award

Texas Rural Communities, Inc. will award a one-time $10,000 grant to the selected applicant to be used for the submitted project.

Application Process

Applications must be postmarked no later than October 14, 2005. Applications submitted by fax or e-mail will not be accepted. Each application must include 6 additional copies (of application only) and a diskette or CD with an electronic version of the application.

Applicants will be notified by mail by approximately January 16, 2006 of selected recipient.

Application Format

Applications must be submitted in the following format, by section number, and must not be longer than five (5) pages, single-spaced in size 12 font. All applications must include a cover letter on the organization's letterhead. Applications not submitted in the following format will not be considered. Each application should include a one-page summary of the innovative program and contact information.

Section I
a. Name, Mailing Address, Telephone Number and e-mail of Contact person for grant
b. Name and Address of Organization

Section II
a. Purpose of Organization

Section III
a. Description of innovative project
b. Description of significant problems solved by innovation
c. Description of demonstrated success and achieved outcomes for at least one year.
d. Examples of how project is unique.

Section IV
a. Evidence that project may be duplicated in other rural areas of the state

Attachments
a. Current fiscal year budget, balance sheet, profit/loss statement
b. Letters of Recommendation-(Limit 2)
c. IRS 501 (c) 3 Certificate

Note: TRC reserves the right to publish applications and/or innovative project descriptions on its web site, even if the project is not selected as the recipient of the funds.
